During the London trip, I’ve tried to find comics. Of course, ’cause I love them in France.
First discover, it’s hard to find some in London… I’ve been in a book-shop (of course, it’s a book). When asked where the comics were, the seller couldn’t aswer me exactly. They had some mangas, but comics….
Oh, and I couldn’t get the good name for that kind of litterature : comics, graphic novel (English I think), or Illustrated novel (the american version). So finally, I just asked for Art Spiegelman’s Maus… And it worked !!!!
But I wasn’t looking for that…
In the shelf, there were more or less 20 books… Some, really poor ! But still, I found what I was looking for : something I wasn’t expected.
Let me introduce you Blankets, by Craig Thompson. I know, it’s an american novel and not an english one… But still , I came back with my book, so I’m happy !
That guy’s work is really impressive !
So, there it is :
Original & french versions. I prefer the original one !
I’m not really interested in telling you the story, ’cause afterwards you’ll never buy the book !! Just know that this is a first-love novel. But not « just » a first-love novel, ’cause it’s Graig Thompson’s, and it’s also he’s search for his soul and his place is both family and life. And it’s really well written (as far as I could catch the meaning of course !)
I could not resist sharing you some extracts…
Personnaly, I love that one… Life seems so easy !!
But the most impressive think about that book is the drawings, that are really amazing !
It’s quite hard to comment, ’cause I can’t find the godd words in english… So I’m gonna stop !

Je ne connais pas Blankets en V.O., mais je suis bien d’accord, c’est très fort.
D' »un point de vue graphique, il me semble me souvenir de pages très « tourbillonnantes »…
Et à te lire, je me suis fait une petite réflexion : la BD américaine marche fort, très fort, même, elle est connue et bien diffusée en France. La BD britannique, en revanche… Il y a peu d’artistes et peu de moyens de diffusion ?
Tourbillonnant… C’est le mot !
La BD britannique, je t’avoue l’avoir cherchée, mais sans grand succès… Je n’ai pas non plus fait beaucoup d’efforts… Mais le rayon était somme toute fort modeste, pour ne pas dire carrément pauvre !
Du coup, je ne sais pas trop s’il y a peu d’auteurs ou si ils juste un peu en retard, comme nous en France il y a quelques années (à part Tintin et Astérix, la BD « d’auteur » était réservée à un public connaisseur). Je pense que c’est pareil là-bas… (pour la situation française sur la BD, cf. La nouvelle fabrique de l’histoire sur France Culture, semaine spéciale histoire de la BD à l’occasion du festival d’Angoulème.)
